Your Complete Guide for PGWP - Post Graduate Work Permit in Canada

Let's start with "What is PGWP"? 

The PGWP or Post-Graduation Work Permit, is a work authorization granted to International Students who completed a program in a Designated Learning Institution in Canada. It is a great opportunity for students to stay and work full-time after their studies. 

How to apply for PGWP?

The student must meet these requirements in order to be eligible for the PGWP:
  • The Institution must be on the government list of Designated Learning Institution DLI's 
           Find out, if the school is in the list of DLI in Canada - DLI's list
  • The Institution must be a public, post-secondary institution, or a private that one confer degrees (e.g.: Bachelor's, Master's Degree & Diploma)
  • The chosen program must be 8 up to maximum of 3 years.   
            Note: 
            - If you completed a program in 8 months - you'll be granted for 1 year PGWP
            - If you completed a 2 year program - you'll be granted for 3 year PGWP
  • The program must be full-time and not part-time. 
To legally work and apply for PGWP in Canada after studies, it is important that the Study Permit of the student must be valid at the time of the application. An international student has up to 180 days from the date of the receipt of letter of completion or official transcript to apply for a Post-Graduation Work 
Permit. 

Things to prepare for PGWP Application: 
  • IMM 5710e - Download the form from your Gckey account or from your Portal. 
  • Adobe Acrobat - Make sure to install/download it to your computer, you cannot open the IMM form without the Adobe Acrobat.
  • Recent Education Transcript - After you completed your program, after a few weeks the Institution that you have attended will email it to you. 
  • Completion of Studies Letter - A letter from your school that you have officially graduated and completed the program. 
  • Passport - Make sure the Passport that you have is valid and not expired. 
  • Digital Photo - A photo of yourself. 
  • Fees - Cost $255 CAD
